You only talk about ethanol, but I wonder if butanol ould not be a better way because of its qualities as biogasoline : more energetic, less corosive…
A valid point.
I do this for a few reasons. 1.) Butanol from algae is a more complex, more involved process than ethanol. It is also outside the realm of what most people would attempt at home. 2.) It is more dangerous to produce. As you said, it is “more energetic” meaning, it is more explosive. 3.) It is more geared to professional producers than home producers.
Having said that, this is a viable fuel which can be produced from algae.
