OK, nothing says you can't build biodiesel processors at home,
using readily available materials and scrounging second-hand
material at dumps. It's been done before and a lot of people
are doing it now.
However, let's be real. You need certain skills
to build a biodiesel reactor, you need a workshop, and you need
tools. This isn't something you're going to throw together on a
Sunday afternoon. The people building biodiesel processors are
mechanical do-it-yourself types, used to working with these
materials and a some mechanical ability. In short, they know
what they are doing. If you are one of these people, keep
reading. The purpose of this page is to give you an overview of
what you can expect.
Having Said That...
A home made biodiesel processor comes in all shapes and
sizes. It really depends on you, your situation and your needs.
Her's an excellent website giving you an overview of various
biodiesel fuel
processors.
How much biodiesel do you need to produce? How often will
you be "home-brewing?" Do you have the space and tools to build
a biodiesel reactor? Do you have space and storage capacity to
store what you've created?
A good many (Some of the best) processors are
made from old hot water tanks, picked up for free, or scrounged
from dumps. This is also a good route for you to consider. Hot
water tanks are made for heating liquids, they have adjustable
thermostats, they are naturally an "enclosed system," This is
necessary for safety reasons. You DONT WANT fumes escaping into
your work space.
Also if you're considering using discarded hot
water tanks for biodiesel, make sure they are fairly free of
calcium build-up and don't have extensive rust on the bottom.
In short, pick a "good" junk hot water tank. Be picky, because
this is important.
Other's are built from 55 gallon drums. I've
also seen some built from old propane tanks. The list goes on.
In a nutshell, what you are looking for is an enclosed steel
container. If your just starting out, I'd recommend using hot
water tanks, either new or used.
At the very least if you think this is something you want to
do, read these pages first, then you may want to check out the
Biodiesel Library., it's the
best one I've found on building your own processor and study up
a bit more.
I created it because in very few places can you
get multiple processors plans of every size, schematics,
designs, color pictures and step-by-step instructions. If
you're serious about doing this, then educate yourself
first.
After all, that's why you're here isn't
it?.
If you have the determination and want to know
how to build a biodiesel processor, below you'll find links to
various biodiesel processor plans and designs culled from open
sources on the web. I've included links back to the original
site where applicable. Some are very detailed and include
diagrams, plans, detail photos, etc. It is entirely possible to
build your own biodiesel processor from these pages. All the
information you need is right here.
